Becoming a Member of WPC – What’s the Big Deal?
Maybe you have been coming to church for a while and wondering “what’s next?” You’ve seen others join the church but don’t know what it’s all about.
We like to think of it in two ways. If you date someone for a while either you or your “significant friend” might ask, “Where is this going? Are we going to get married?” Of course, marriage is an expression of greater commitment. Joining a church is a lot like taking that step. It’s publicly declaring that you are no longer dating the church!
The second reason why membership is important is because our church is governed by the members of the church. Some churches are governed by a hierarchy. Ours is organized in a representative form of government. We elect people to leadership who make decisions concerning the well-being and vision of the church. At times all the members gather to vote on certain important issues. Before you have a voice in decisions we want to make sure you are committed to the welfare of our church community. So, we ask you to join formally.
You may not be ready to make that commitment. That’s O.K. Take your time. There is no rush. You are not a number to us. Join when your ready. Maybe you are ready right now and are wondering about the next step.
Four times a year we offer a class called Membership 101. It is usually preceding or following one of the worship services so childcare is available. In the class you will learn about who we are, our mission, how to get connected and a pathway for discipleship.
We share with you our Next Steps for discipleship:
- Step 1 – Membership. This is a covenental relationship between you, the disciple, and the church. Basically it means you are on board with the mission – to be a disciple who makes disciples. Now you can go ahead and dive into being a disciple.
- Step 2 – Join a Life Group. We believe discipleship happens best in relationship, so we encourage all members to join a life group where you can discover more about God’s Word, prayer, fellowship with believers, and truly grow as a disciple. This gets you ready for the next step.
- Step 3 – Find a Ministry. Discover how you were shaped, by God, for a specific ministry in the church and how to get involved. And Elder or staff member will contact you and connect you with the right ministry, a way to serve in the church that matches your passions, gifts, and availability. This helps you become a disciple who makes disciples by finding your place in the church family.
- Step 4 – Uncover your mission. It is not just about what happens inside the building on Sunday morning, but really God’s Church exists for others and you will discover your call to help somewhere in your community or the world. Again, an elder or staff member will help you find your mission so you are a disciple making disciples out in the world.
